During the British Colonial period, Hong Kong's coinage evolved from a mix of foreign currencies including Indian rupees, Spanish and Mexican Reales, but in 1863, the colonial government introduced the first special Hong Kong coins, including 10-cent, 1-cent, and 1 Mil Pieces. Hong Kong coins minted from 1863 to 1992 featured the effigy of the British monarch.
