John Bell (1796-1869) was a Tennessee politician who ran for president as a third-party candidate in 1860. Never a truly serious contender, Bell ran on a wishy-washy platform that was anti-secession, alienating Southerners, but also pro-slavery, alienating Notherners. Deemed "Nobody's Man" by newspapers at the time, he won just 3% of the popular vote.
