The Duchy of Jülich and the Duchy of Berg were two member states of the Holy Roman Empire until, in 1423, they merged to become the Duchy of Jülich-Berg. Jülich-Berg would later merge again to become Jülich-Cleves-Berg. Count Carl Theodor, a great lover of the arts and patron of Mozart, inherited the duchy in 1742.
