Late Roman Empire 567-578AD Justin II Gold Solidus Extra Fine (EF40)

The nephew and successor of Justinian the Great, Justin II was emperor of the Byzantine Empire from 565 to 578. Because of his ambitious uncle's designs to restore the fractured Roman Empire, he found his inheritance overextended and beset by enemies on all sides. Ultimately, Justin's reign was marked by war, mental illness, and the loss of most of Italy to the Lombards, ending the dream a restored Rome forever.

This gold solidus, struck at the 7th officina of the Constantinople mint, features a facing bust of Justin, helmeted and cuirassed, holding Victory on a globe on the obverse. The text reads DN IVSTINVS PP AVG, an abridged Latin script meaning "Our Lord Justin Forever Augustus." The reverse features Constantinopolis, a personification of the city of Constantinople, looking right, holding a scepter and a globus cruciger.
