France 1824 Charles X 5 Francs

When Louis XVIII died in 1824, having spent his life trying (with mixed success) to heal the wounds of the French Revolution and bridge the gap between royalists and republicans, he was succeeded by his younger brother, Charles X. Charles was not Louis. He had no desire to work within the confines of constitutional monarchy, parliamentary government, or all those newfangled guaranteed human rights that had popped up with the Revolution. Charles wanted the absolute power that was his God-given right.

Predictably, this backfired. The French may have begrudingly accepted their royal family back into government, but they were not about to wind the clock back to the 1780s. Charles' attempts to restore absolute monarchy and restrict civil liberties tore France into factions. The tension boiled over in July of 1830, when the Second French Revolution ripped Charles from power and replaced him with his more liberal cousin, Louis Philippe, Duke of Orleans. Eugène Delacroix's famous painting, Liberty Leading the People commemorates this event.

Now you can own a piece of this fascinating and tumultuous time in French history with this 5 franc coin, which dates to 1824, the very first year of Charles' 6-year reign.
