In March 1912, the first completely Canadian Gold Coins, from raw material to design, were struck at the Ottawa Branch of the British Royal Mint (now the Royal Canadian Mint). These coins were authorized as under the Currency Act of 1910, as Canada sought to establish a stronger, more independent currency system aligned with the Gold Standard.
