LC-1 1815 Lower Canada Magdelan Island Success to the Fisheries Penny Token Extra Fine (EF-40)

The Magdalen Islands are an archipelago in the Gulf of the St. Lawrence, which was settled by the French. They were governed first from Acadia, and then after 1713 from Isle Royale. In 1763, the islands were ceded to Great Britain and placed under the control of the government in Newfoundland. When the Quebec Act was passed in 1774, the Magdalen Islands were transferred to the colony of Quebec. In 1791, they were included in the territory of Lower Canada.

After the American Revolution, the islands were granted to Sir Isaac Coffin as a reward for loyalty during the war. In 1815, he visited the islands for the first and only time, intending to set up a feudal barony, forcing the residents to pay rent to farm land that they had cleared and occupied for decades. A priviledge was granted to Sir Isaac Coffin to coin money, so he ordered a coinage of pennies from Sir Edward Thomason of Birmingham, and planned to issue halfpennies as well. It is reputed that he took a coining press and dies with him in order to set up a mint on the island. After a long history of bad relations, in 1895 the government of Canada bought the land from the descendants of Sir Isaac Coffin and sold the land back to it's inhabitants.
