British North Borneo 1886H Cent VF-EF (VF-30)
The British North Borneo 1886H Cent was issued by the British North Borneo Company, a private commercial enterprise authorized by the British Crown to govern, administer, and develop the territory of North Borneo. Operating under a Royal Charter granted by Queen Victoria in 1881, the company possessed the right to issue its own coinage for circulation within the colony. Struck in bronze at the Heaton & Sons Mint in Birmingham, England, as indicated by the “H” mintmark. The coin’s reverse features the denomination “ONE CENT” rendered in English, Chinese characters, and Malay, reflecting the region’s diverse population and the company’s intent to create a universally recognized medium of exchange for everyday trade.
