Bolivia 1763 Potosi Mint 8 Reales VF-EF (VF-30)

This coin is what is known as a Cob coin, also known as Macuquinas. The Potosi Mint made cob coins until 1772. Cob coins are considered the original "treasure coins" - Pirates referred to silver cob coins as "Pieces of Eight" (8 reales). Throughout the 16th to 18th centuries, they were struck and trimmed by hand at Spanish mints such as in Mexico, Peru, and Columbia. These silver and gold coins are often crude, nearly all with a cross as the central feature on the obverse, and either a coat-of-arms or a tic-tac-toe like patter "pillars and waves" on the reverse. As cob coins were rarely round or uniform in thickness, they were often clipped, leading to coins being below legal weight.
