The Australian Sixpence was circulated from 1910 until the decimalisation of Australian currency in 1966. Initially minted in England, production began in Australia in 1916 at the Royal Mint branches in Sydney and Melbourne. Following the establishment of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901 and the Coinage Act of 1909, Australia gained authority to mint its own coinage, and on March 1, 1910, Sydney received its first shipment of Commonwealth silver shillings from the Royal Mint in London, with sixpence coins arriving later that year to complete the new silver currency set. The word “sixpence” derives from “saxpence,” and in Australian English it was commonly referred to as a “zac,” a slang term first recorded in the 1890s that also came to mean “a trifling sum of money.”
