1951 Honolulu, HI, Hula Girl Bus Token in Vintage Paper Holder (wear)

In 1951, as tourism to Hawaii was surging in popularity, the Honolulu Rapid Transit Company had a fun idea to appeal to visitors: themed bus tokens. Each token bore the tiny likeness of a miniature hula girl, her arms up and her hip jutting in her grass skirt. It was an amusing reminder of the tropical paradise that the buses trundled through. Of course, what ended up happening probably should have been obvious: they appealed to visitors a little too much, and most of them ended up nicked by tourists who thought they were too cute to leave behind. Sadly, this forced the Honolulu Rapid Transit Company to switch to generic bus tokens. The hula girl, however, remains a popular -- and adorable -- collector's item.

This hula girl bus token comes in its original vintage paper holder, as it was sold when the token retired as an actual, circulating transit token and became a souvenir item. Naturally, the token and/or holder are likely to show some wear due to their age.
