1977 British Columbia Chinese Dynasties Sung Dollar Trade Token
In 1977, British Columbia issued a series of five commemorative dollars honouring the five Chinese royal dynasties: Táng, Sòng (Sung), Yuán, Míng, and Q?ng (Ching). A historical hub for Chinese immigration, British Columbia is to this day very proud of its Chinese heritage, and boasts the second-largest Chinatown in North America.
This trade dollar celebrates the Sòng Dynasty. Beginning in 960, the Sòng (as it is now preferably spelt) ruled over a Golden Age in Chinese history, when technology, science, engineering, art, and philosophy all flourished. Sòng China saw the invention of paper banknotes, gunpowder, the true north compass, canal locks, and movable type printing. The Sòng ruled until 1279, when they were toppled by Kublai Khan, Great Khan of the Mongol Empire, at the Battle of Yamen. Kublai would found the Mongol-led Yuán dynasty.
