On January 7, 1785, Jean-Pierre Blanchard and John Jeffries became the first men to successfully cross the English Channel by air. They did it in a hydrogen balloon, flying from Dover to Calais in about three hours.
This commemorative medallion from the Royal Air Force Museum celebrates Blanchard and Jeffries with a detailed engraving of both men and their balloon on the obverse side.
