Based in Petawawa, Ontario, the 450 Tactical Helicopter Squadron flies Chinook helicopters to provide support in military and paramilitary endeavours. They provide resupplies, search and rescue efforts, and medical evacuations, and respond to natural disasters when needed.
Challenge coins as they exist today have been carried by the members of military units since at least the 1950s. They are meant to be presented in response to a "challenge" -- that is, they are tokens that prove affiliation with the group when asked. These challenges are sometimes called "coin checks."
