1967 Great Seal of the Island of Cape Breton Gold-Plated Replica Medallion

Connected to Nova Scotia by the 1300-metre Canso Causeway, Cape Breton is one of the oldest sites of European habitation in North America. Trade between European settlers and local Mi'kmaq peoples dates back to at least the 1520s, and possibly as far back as the 1490s. Layers of Scottish, French, British, and Irish immigration created a cultural pastiche that lends the island a unique identity even today.

Throughout its long colonial history, Cape Breton Island has been administratively joined to and separated from Nova Scotia several times, with the last merger happening in 1820. This gold-plated medallion, produced during Canada's Centennial celebration in 1967, recreates the Great Seal of Cape Breton Island, which was used until the colony was united with Nova Scotia for the last time.
