The 1893 Columbian Exposition, also known as the Chicago World's Fair, was the first event to feature the elongated penny. Created using a hand-cranked "penny press," early examples circulated almost exclusively at world's fairs until the idea took off in the 1960s. The introduction of the private, coin-operated penny press machine came in 1979, with the first one offering an "I Love Oregon" design at the Meier & Frank Company department store. They were introduced to Disneyland in 1987, and soon exploded in popularity. Even today, penny presses can be found at many popular tourist destinations.
This group lot includes 44 elongated pennies from across Canada and the USA. Highlights include Alcatraz, the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean, and many from Niagara Falls!
