Held in Montreal, the 1967 International and Universal Exposition, known colloquially as Expo 67, was one of the most successful world's fairs of the twentieth century. It was the main celebration of Canada's centennial year. Several pavilions became permanent landmarks in Montreal, including the Montreal Casino (formerly the Pavilion de la France) and the Montreal Biosphère (formerly the American Pavilion).
This elongated penny features the Russian (or Moscow) Pavilion, a sweeping, glass construction designed for the Soviet Union. Elongated pennies like this one came from hand-cranked machines which flattened a penny and stamped it with a souvenir image. They were popular at theme parks and tourist attractions from the 1960s up through the retirement of the penny.
