2014-2018 Great War Centenary Bimetallic Enamelled Menin Gate Memorial Medallion
2014 through 2018 marked the 100th anniversary of the First World War. A number of commemorative coins and medallions were minted, including this one, which features a handsome bimetallic design with selective enamelling. A soldier stands at attention in front of a red poppy, with surrounding text in both English and Dutch. The reverse shows the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres (now Ieper), Belgium, which commemorates the over 54,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers who died at Ypres but have no known grave. Names on the Menin Gate Memorial include over 7,000 Canadians.
