Piedfort coins are unusually thick -- usually, twice the thickness and weight of a normal coin. Originating in France in the 12th century, piedforts were probably originally produced as guides for engravers, but they soon became prestigious collector's items amongst royals, nobility, and dignitaries. This is the historical beginning of coin collecting as a hobby, and the primary reason for its designation as "the hobby of kings."
This fine silver piedfort celebrates the history and heritage of the Royal Canadian Mint by paying tribute to a well-loved commemorative piece engraved by Thomas Shingles, Master Engraver of the Royal Canadian Mint from 1943 to 1965. The reverse features the Matthew, the 15th-century ship believed to have been captained by John Cabot when he arrived in Newfoundland. The obverse displays the effigy of King George VI, who graced the original piece.
