Portugal 1723 John V 10 Reis Fine (F12) Impaired

Remembered as the Sun King of Portugal, John (or João) V was sovereign during Portugal's rise to its zenith as a colonial power. Thanks to an absolutely massive influx of precious metals from South America, John was able to spend lavishly on architecture and art, and expand Portugal's colonial holdings into Mughal India and the west coast of Africa. His magnum opus was the Royal Palace-Convent of Mafra, a sprawling palatial complex that combined royal residence, library, basilica, and, puzzlingly, a convent. It took more than 21,000 people -- including, literally, the entire population of Mafra and neighbouring Ericeira -- to complete. Today, John is remembered as o Magnânimo -- the Magnanimous.
