German States 1859 Württemberg Thaler Extra Fine (EF40) Scratched
Württemberg is the traditional territory of the House of Württemberg. Originally a county within the Holy Roman Empire, it became a duchy in 1495 and remained such until Napoleon dissolved the Empire in 1806. From that point until the First World War, Württemberg was an independent kingdom with its own monarchy, constitution, and institutions within the German Confederation and, later, the German Empire. When that fell apart, Württemberg lived on as the Free People's State of Württemberg until the end of World War II, when it became part of the West German state of Baden-Württemberg, which is still its name today as a state within modern Germany.
