Demerara-Essequibo 1813 1/2 Stiver Very Good (VG8) DOD
Located on the coast of modern Guyana, the historical colony of Demerara-Essequibo was the short-lived name for the unified colonies of, unsurprisingly, Demerara and Essequibo. Like most tropical colonies in the Americas, these were plantation settlements that used massive populations of enslaved people to run huge agricultural estates. These produced crops like sugar, tobacco, cotton, and rice for global trade at the cost of immense human suffering. In Demerara-Essequibo, the dominant crop was sugar cane; the population was about 2,500 whites and 2,500 free blacks to a whopping 77,000 African-born and Creole slaves. Unsurprisingly, this led to a trend of slave revolts. In 1831, Demerara-Essequibo was dissolved when it was combined with Berbice to create British Guiana.
