Narrow 9: Making early Canadian pennies involved a bit of a learning curve. In 1858 and 1859, dies were introduced to produce coins of the same size, weight, and diameter as British coins. One problem: Canadian planchets were bronze, and were therefore much harder than copper British ones, and they were soon chewing through dies during the minting process. This was especially true for reverse dies, where the wreath of leaves near the rim presented a particular challenge. The result was a bunch of different 1859 varieties, with most of them falling into the category of "Narrow 9."
