Max Emanuel fought for the Holy Roman Empire, but then turned against it and allied with France in the War of the Spanish Succession, hoping that his family could supplant the Habsburgs on the throne. Three years after the war ended, he was allied with the Holy Roman Empire again against the Ottomans. While Max Emanuel's imperial dreams were never realised, his son, Charles Albert, did rise to become Charles VII some sixteen years after Max Emanuel's death.
