Ancient Rome Late Summer 475 - August 476AD Basiliscus & Marcus Gold Tremissis Almost Uncirculated (AU50)
Basiliscus and Marcus were short-lived Eastern Roman rulers during the turbulent years of AD 475–476. Basiliscus, the brother-in-law of Emperor Leo I, seized the throne in a coup against Emperor Zeno and elevated his young son Marcus as co-emperor to legitimize his rule. Their reign was marked by religious controversy, political mismanagement, and loss of support from both the military and the populace. Within less than two years, Zeno returned to power, capturing Basiliscus and Marcus and having them imprisoned, where they ultimately died.
