Poland-Lithuania 1547 1/2 Grosz Extra Fine (EF-40)
In the 16th century, Lithuania was a powerful state as part of the Polish–Lithuanian union, formally strengthened by the Union of Lublin in 1569, which created the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Before this union, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania had already been one of the largest states in Europe, stretching from the Baltic to the Black Sea, but it faced growing pressure from Muscovy and the Crimean Tatars. The 16th century was also a period of significant cultural change, as Renaissance ideas and the Reformation reached Lithuania, influencing both politics and religion. The union with Poland bound Lithuania’s future to that of its western neighbor, ensuring its survival against external threats but also beginning a gradual process of Polonization among its nobility.
