Hungary 1627 NB Transylvania Grochen VF-EF (VF30)

In the 17th century, Transylvania stood as a semi-independent principality caught between three great powers: the Habsburg Monarchy, the Ottoman Empire, and the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Though nominally under Ottoman suzerainty, it often pursued its own foreign policy, skillfully playing its larger neighbors against one another to maintain autonomy. Transylvania became a haven for religious diversity, with official recognition granted to Catholics, Lutherans, Calvinists, and Unitarians, making it unusually tolerant for the time. Under rulers like Gabriel Bethlen and later George I Rákóczi, the principality reached a cultural and political high point, fostering education, trade, and the arts. However, by the century’s end, increasing Habsburg pressure gradually eroded its independence, foreshadowing its eventual integration into the Austrian sphere of influence.

Obverse: A cross on top of a Hungarian crown, on top of twofold Hungarian Coat of Arms in a slightly curved shield, dividing the mint mark "NB", with the legend around.
Reverse: Crowned Madonna with a child on her left arm, with a scepter in her right hand, perched on a crescent, date at 10 o'clock, with the legend around.
