Hungary 1615 NB Matthias II Grochen Extra Fine (EF40)
Matthias II of Hungary (1557–1619) was King of Hungary and Croatia from 1608, King of Bohemia from 1611, and Holy Roman Emperor from 1612 until his death. A member of the Habsburg dynasty, he came to power after opposing his brother, Emperor Rudolf II, in a dynastic struggle that weakened imperial authority. Matthias sought compromise with Protestant estates in Hungary and Bohemia, granting concessions to maintain stability, but his reign also witnessed growing tensions that would soon erupt into the Thirty Years’ War. Though personally more moderate than some of his predecessors, his inability to resolve religious and political divisions left his successors with a deeply fractured empire.
Obverse: A cross on top of a Hungarian crown, on top of twofold Hungarian Coat of Arms in a slightly curved shield, dividing the mint mark "NB", with the legend around.
Reverse: Crowned Madonna with a child on her left arm, with a scepter in her right hand, perched on a crescent, date at 10 o'clock, with the legend around.
