Austria 1698 Leopold I 3 Kreuzer AU-UNC (AU55)
Leopold I (1640–1705) was Holy Roman Emperor from 1658 until his death, ruling during a time of near-constant conflict. A member of the Habsburg dynasty, he spent much of his reign defending his empire against the expansionist ambitions of Louis XIV of France and the advancing Ottoman Turks. Notably, his forces helped repel the Ottoman siege of Vienna in 1683, a turning point in European history. Though often described as cautious and deeply religious, Leopold proved resilient, consolidating Habsburg power and laying the groundwork for Austria’s rise as a dominant Central European state.
Obverse: Bust of Leopold I of Hapsburg facing right, with the legend around, and denomination below.
Reverse: Three shield in a circle of pearls; top shield contains a double headed eagle, the remaining shields represent Burgundy and Styria, date above, with the legend around, and the mint mark divides the legend around.
