Spain 1516-1556 Charles & Johanna Seville Mint Gold Escudo Extra Fine (EF40)

Joanna (also known as "Juana la Loca" or "Joanna the Mad") inherited the crowns of Castile and Aragon after her mother Isabella I and father Ferdinand II, which made her a key figure in Spain’s royal succession. However, her mental health became a source of controversy—she reportedly suffered from deep depression and obsessive behavior, particularly after the death of her husband, Philip I of Castile (Philip the Handsome). Charles, her son (also known as Charles I and Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor), was technically her co-ruler, but because of Joanna’s mental state, he assumed the actual administration of Spain at a young age. Interestingly, Joanna remained confined in Toledo and later Tordesillas for decades, effectively a prisoner of her own family, yet she was never officially deposed and remained queen in name until her death in 1555. Joanna was deeply attached to her husband, Philip I of Castile. After Philip died suddenly in 1506, Joanna was reportedly so grief-stricken that she could not bear to part from his body. According to contemporary accounts, she had his coffin placed in a carriage, and she traveled with it across the country, refusing to bury him. Her attendants eventually had to intervene, and Philip was interred in the Royal Chapel of Granada, but Joanna’s mourning and obsession with his body became legendary. This intense and unusual behavior contributed to her nickname, “Juana la Loca”, and is often cited as evidence—though likely exaggerated—of her supposed mental instability.
