Hungary 1673KB Leopold I 6 Kreuzer VF-EF (VF30)
Leopold I of Austria (1640–1705) was Holy Roman Emperor from 1658 until his death and a key figure in 17th-century European politics. A member of the Habsburg dynasty, he presided over a period of nearly constant warfare, including the wars against the Ottoman Empire, most notably the 1683 Siege of Vienna, after which he played a major role in pushing the Ottomans back from Central Europe. Leopold also fought prolonged conflicts with France under Louis XIV, including the War of the Spanish Succession, which began shortly before his death. Though often described as cautious and deeply religious, he was an effective defender of Habsburg power, strengthening his dynasty’s influence in Central and Eastern Europe. His long reign helped secure Austria’s role as a dominant force in European politics well into the 18th century.
Obverse: Small and narrow laureate portrait of Leopold I facing right, within a beaded circle, with the value in a circle below dividing the legend.
