Great Britain 1696Y William III 6 Pence G-VG (G6)
William III of England (1650–1702), also known as William of Orange, was a Dutch prince who became King of England, Scotland, and Ireland after the Glorious Revolution of 1688. Invited by English nobles, he and his wife Mary II—daughter of the deposed James II—took the throne jointly, establishing a constitutional monarchy that limited royal power and strengthened Parliament. William’s reign was marked by religious and political change, including the passage of the Bill of Rights (1689), which became a cornerstone of English constitutional law. A staunch Protestant, William focused much of his energy on resisting the expansionist ambitions of Louis XIV of France, leading England into the Nine Years’ War and later the War of the Spanish Succession. Though often more preoccupied with European affairs than domestic governance, William’s reign reshaped the monarchy, securing Protestant succession and laying the groundwork for modern parliamentary government.
