Great Britain 1625-1642 Tower Mint Charles I Shilling VF-EF (VF30)

Charles I of England (1600–1649) reigned from 1625 until his execution and is remembered as one of the most controversial monarchs in British history. The second son of James I, Charles strongly believed in the divine right of kings and often clashed with Parliament over finances, taxation, and religious policies. His attempts to rule without Parliament, impose unpopular taxes, and enforce Anglican practices alienated both Puritans and other Protestant groups. These tensions ultimately led to the outbreak of the English Civil War (1642–1651), pitting royalist supporters of the king against Parliamentarian forces led by figures like Oliver Cromwell. After years of conflict, Charles was captured, tried for treason, and executed in 1649—an unprecedented act that shocked Europe. His death marked the temporary abolition of the monarchy and the rise of the Commonwealth, though he would later be viewed by some as a martyr for the royalist cause.

Obverse: Large crowned bust of Charles I facing left with a lace collar, with the Roman numerals XII to the right, indicating that it is worth 12 pence (one shilling), and the legend around.
Reverse: A quartered Shield of Arms over a cross within an inner circle, with the legend around.
