France 1658 Louis XIV 1/2 Ecu VG-F (VG10)

Louis XIV of France (1638–1715), known as the “Sun King,” reigned from 1643 until his death and is remembered as one of the most powerful and influential monarchs in European history. His reign of 72 years is the longest in French history. Louis embodied the principles of absolute monarchy, famously declaring “L’état, c’est moi” (“I am the state”), and centralized power firmly in the crown. He built the magnificent Palace of Versailles, which became both the seat of government and a symbol of royal grandeur. Louis pursued ambitious wars to expand French influence, making France the dominant power in Europe, though these conflicts also strained the economy. Domestically, he strengthened royal authority, patronized the arts, and promoted Catholic orthodoxy, including the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, which drove many Protestants from France. His reign left a lasting legacy of cultural brilliance and political centralization, though it also sowed the seeds of future financial and social unrest.

Obverse: The laureate, childlike bust of Louis XIV facing right, draped and cuirassed, with the order of the Holy Spirit, a long wick decending on the cuirass, with the legend around.
