Crusader States 1205-18 Kingdom of Cyprus Hugh I Silver Denier Very Fine (VF20)

Hugh I de Lusignan (c. 1194–1218) was King of Cyprus from 1205 until his death. The son of Aimery of Lusignan and Isabella I of Jerusalem, he inherited the throne as a child and ruled under the regency of his mother until he came of age. Hugh’s reign was relatively peaceful compared to the turbulent Crusader politics of the era, and he focused on strengthening the kingdom of Cyprus as a key base for Crusader activity in the eastern Mediterranean. He maintained close ties with the Latin Church and Western Europe, ensuring Cyprus remained an important staging point for expeditions to the Holy Land. Hugh I died young in 1218, leaving his infant son, Henry I, as his successor, and passing the kingdom once again into a regency.

Obverse: Cross pattée with crescents in the first and fourth quarters, stars in the second and third quarters, all within a beaded ring, with the legend around.
Reverse: A tower with two battlements, with a star in the middle, legend around.
