Crusader States 1143-63 Kingdom of Jerusalem Baldwin III Denier Extra Fine (EF40)

Baldwin III of Jerusalem (1130–1163) was king of the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem from 1143 until his death. The son of Fulk of Anjou and Queen Melisende, Baldwin initially ruled under his mother’s regency but asserted his independence after a period of conflict with her. His reign was marked by both military challenges and political consolidation. Baldwin faced the devastating loss of Edessa, the first Crusader state to fall, which prompted the Second Crusade, though it achieved little success. Despite setbacks, he proved to be a capable ruler, capturing the important city of Ascalon from the Fatimids in 1153, thereby securing Jerusalem’s southern border. Known for his fairness and piety, Baldwin died young at just 33, leaving the throne to his brother, Amalric I. His reign is often remembered as a period of both hardship and resilience for the Crusader kingdom.
