Ancient Rome 161AD Struck Under Marcus Aurelius - Divus Antoninus Pius Silver Denarius Very Fine (VF20)
Antoninus Pius (86–161 CE), born Titus Aurelius Fulvus Boionius Antoninus, was Roman emperor from 138 to 161 CE and is remembered as one of the “Five Good Emperors” for his just and peaceful rule. Adopted by Hadrian, he became emperor after the death of Lucius Aelius and distinguished himself through stability, good governance, and a strong sense of duty. His reign was marked by internal peace, with no major wars, and he focused instead on legal reforms, infrastructure, and the fair administration of justice. Antoninus also honored his deified wife, Faustina the Elder, with temples and monuments, reinforcing imperial piety. His long, stable rule strengthened the empire and provided the secure foundation upon which his successors, Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus, would build.
