Ancient Rome 54-68AD Nero Silver Denarius EF-AU (EF45)

Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus (37–68 CE), born Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus in Antium, was the fifth Roman emperor, ruling from 54 to 68 CE, and remains one of the most controversial figures in Roman history. Initially guided by capable advisers like Seneca and Burrus, his early reign saw stability and public works, but over time he became infamous for extravagance, cruelty, and political murders, including those of his mother Agrippina and wife Octavia. Nero was a patron of the arts and famously performed as an actor and musician, shocking Roman elites with his public appearances. His rule faced crises, most notoriously the Great Fire of Rome in 64 CE, after which he built his lavish Golden House and was accused of blaming Christians for the disaster. Growing unrest and rebellion eventually led the Senate to declare him a public enemy; abandoned by his guards, Nero committed suicide in 68 CE, ending the Julio-Claudian dynasty.

Obverse: Laureate and bearded head of Nero, facing right, with legend around.
Reverse: Salus, draped and seated left on an ornamental throne, holding a patera in her right hand and resting her left hand on her side.
