Ancient Seleucis & Pieria 36-33BC Marc Antony & Cleopatra Tetradrachm G-VG (G-6) scratch SCARCE
Marc Antony and Cleopatra were central figures in the final years of the Roman Republic, whose personal and political alliance shaped Mediterranean history. Marc Antony, a Roman general and member of the Second Triumvirate, formed both a romantic and strategic partnership with Cleopatra VII, the last Pharaoh of Egypt, after the assassination of Julius Caesar. Their union, aimed at consolidating power and countering Octavian, produced three children and fueled Roman anxieties about foreign influence and ambition. The pair’s combined forces were ultimately defeated by Octavian at the Battle of Actium in 31 BCE, leading to their suicides the following year. Their story has endured as a dramatic tale of love, ambition, and the clash between personal desire and political destiny.
Obverse: The diademed bust of Queen Cleopatra VII facing right, with her hair in cornrows, wearing beaded earrings, a necklace, and an embroidered dress, legend and border of dots around.
