Ancient Roman Republic 49-44BC, First Half of March 44 Julius Caesar P. Sepullius Macer VG-F (VG10)

Julius Caesar (100–44 BCE) was one of the most influential figures in Roman history, known as a military genius, politician, and reformer. Rising through the ranks of the Roman Republic, he expanded Rome’s territories dramatically, most famously through his conquest of Gaul, which brought immense wealth and power to the state. Caesar’s political maneuvers, including forming the First Triumvirate with Pompey and Crassus, allowed him to dominate Roman politics, but his growing authority alarmed the Senate. In 49 BCE, he famously crossed the Rubicon River, igniting civil war, which ultimately led to his dictatorship. Caesar implemented significant reforms, including reorganizing the calendar, restructuring debt, and centralizing the government, but his concentration of power made him a target. In 44 BCE, he was assassinated on the Ides of March by a group of senators seeking to preserve the Republic, an act that instead paved the way for the rise of the Roman Empire.
