Ancient Roman Republic 113-112BC Gladiators T. Didius Silver Denarius VF-EF (VF30)
Titus Didius was a Roman statesman and general of the late 2nd and early 1st centuries BCE, noted for his campaigns in Hispania. As consul in 98 BCE, he waged war against the Celtiberians, securing Roman victories and consolidating control in the region. Didius was known for his harsh methods, including the destruction of towns and the killing of surrendered populations, which, though effective militarily, earned him a reputation for cruelty. He later served as censor in 92 BCE, continuing his public career. His actions in Spain reflect both the determination and the brutality with which Rome expanded its power during the Republic.
