Marcus Sergius Silus was a Roman general of the 3rd century BCE, remembered for his remarkable resilience during the Second Punic War. Despite losing his right hand in battle against the Carthaginians, he had an iron prosthetic made, allowing him to continue wielding his sword and leading troops. According to Pliny the Elder, Sergius fought in over 20 battles, was wounded repeatedly, and taken prisoner twice, yet he always returned to service. His determination and courage made him a symbol of Roman perseverance and military spirit, embodying the Republic’s values of strength and endurance in the face of adversity.
