Ancient Roman Republic 119BC Roma with Carnyx & Trophy M. Furius L. F. Philus Silver Denarius Extra Fine (EF40)

Marcus Furius L. f. Philus was a Roman politician and general of the mid-2nd century BCE. Serving as consul in 136 BCE, he was assigned command in the Numantine War in Spain, where Rome struggled against the tough resistance of the Celtiberians. His campaign met with little success, as Numantia continued to defy Roman efforts, reflecting the difficulties faced by several commanders before Scipio Aemilianus finally subdued the city. Despite this setback, Philus remained a respected member of the Roman aristocracy, part of the influential Furia gens that often held high office during the Republic.

Obverse: The laureate and bearded two-faced head of the Roman God Janus, legend around.
Reverse: Roma at right, standing facing left, with a star above, wearing a Corinthian helmet, holding a transversal sceptre in their left hand, and a crowing trophy with their right hand, and a trophy surmounted by a helmet in the form of a boar's head and flanked by a carnyx and shield on each side.
