Ancient Roman Republic 121B Jupiter W/ Thunderbolt in Quadriga Papirius Carbo Silver Denarius Extra Fine (EF-40)

Gaius Papirius Carbo was a Roman politician and general of the 2nd century BCE, best known for his involvement in the turbulent era following the reforms of the Gracchi. A supporter of the populares, he initially backed Tiberius Gracchus and later became consul in 120 BCE. Carbo advocated for extending the secret ballot in Roman elections, a move aimed at reducing aristocratic influence. However, his career was marked by shifting loyalties and political strife, and he ultimately fell out of favor with both factions of Roman politics. Accused of treachery and corruption, he took his own life, reflecting the instability and factionalism that increasingly plagued the late Roman Republic.

Obverse: The helmeted head of Roma facing right, with a laurel branch behind, and an X to the left.
