Ancient Roman Republic 137BC Faustulus & Wolf With Twins Sextus Pompeius Silver Denarius Extra Fine (EF-40)

The Ancient Roman Republic (509–27 BCE) was a system of government that replaced Rome’s monarchy and laid the foundation for one of history’s greatest civilizations. Characterized by a complex balance of power, it featured elected magistrates, the Senate, and popular assemblies that represented different segments of society. The Republic expanded rapidly through military conquest, diplomacy, and alliances, eventually dominating the Italian peninsula and much of the Mediterranean world. Though it prided itself on civic duty and shared governance, tensions between the patrician elite and the plebeian commoners shaped its politics. Over time, growing inequality, ambitious generals, and civil wars weakened the system, paving the way for the rise of Julius Caesar and the transition to the Roman Empire under Augustus.

The Roman moneyer Sextus Pompeius Fostlus was responsible for minting silver dernarii in 137BC. His coins usually featured a helmeted head of Roma, and were minted in Rome.

Obverse: The helmeted head of Roma facing right, with the mark of the money value below the chin, with a jug behind the head (part of the moneyer's mark).
Reverse: A She-wolf sucking Romulus and Remus in front of a wild fig-tree, on which are perched two birds on branches and one bird on the trunk, with the shepherd Faustulus standing facing right while leaning on a club.
