Late Roman Empire 425-455AD Ravenna Mint Valentinian III Gold Solidus AU-UNC (AU-55)
Valentinian III (AD 419–455) was Western Roman Emperor from 425 until his assassination in 455, ascending to the throne as a child under the regency of his mother, Galla Placidia. His long reign was marked by political instability and heavy reliance on influential generals, especially Flavius Aetius, who successfully defended the empire against threats like Attila the Hun. Despite these victories, Valentinian struggled to maintain control over a shrinking Western Empire, plagued by internal rivalries and barbarian incursions. After a falling out with Aetius, Valentinian murdered him, and was in turn assassinated by Aetius' bodyguards. This left the West leaderless on the eve of its collapse.
Obverse: Draped, cuirassed, and diademed bust of Valentinian III facing right, with the legend around.
Valentinian III standing facing right, holding a vexillum in one hand and Victory atop a globe in the other, foot resting on the head of a human-headed coiled serpent, with the legend around, and the mint mark divided by the Emperor.
