Ancient Roman Republic 128BC Pax in Biga Elephant with Bell L. Caecilius Metellus Diadematus Silver Denarius VF-EF (VF-30)
Lucius Caecilius Metellus Diadematus was a member of the prominent Caecilius Metellus family, being the second sun od the Roman politician and general Quintus Caecilius Metellus Macedonicus. As a consul, in 117BC he supported the development of roads in Italy, and could be responsible for the Via Caecilia (an ancient highroad of Italy). He was elected Censor in 115BC, and during this time he and Gnaeus Domitius Ahenobarbus expelled 32 senators from the Senate.
Obverse: The helmeted head of Roma facing right, wearing a winged helmet featuring a griffin crest, with the monogram XVI behind.
Reverse: Pax, the Roman goddess of Peace, driving a galloping biga (two-horse chariot) to the right, holding an olive branch, sceptre, and reins, with an elephant's head wearing a bell below, dividing the inscription ROMA.
