Founded as Montreal Bank in 1817, the Bank of Montreal is Canada's oldest operating bank. Very quickly after being established, branches opened across Lower and Upper Canada, and even as far away as New York City. Western expansion didn't occur until the 1870s, with the first Western branch opening in Winnipeg in 1877. The Bank of Montreal expanded into Newfoundland in 1895, following the collapse of the Commercial Bank and the Union Bank of Newfoundland in 1894. In 1942, the bank ended production of its own bank notes, which had been circulating in Canada since 1871. Today, the Bank of Montreal, known as BMO, has more than 900 branches across Canada, and more than 1000 in the United States, and serves over 13 million customers globally.
