Storytellers are vital to the Inuit way of life, for they pass down traditions like hunting and akpik (cloudberry) picking, as well as the cultural understanding of those skills – the why and how they fit into the seasonal cycles of the natural world where every living thing is interconnected. That concept is beautifully illustrated on this fine silver coin’s reverse, which presents a visual story of interconnectedness viewed from above – a story that reflects the Inuit view of our place within nature, not apart from it.
Featured on the coin’s reverse, cloudberries (Rubus chamaemorus) are a fruit that grows in the peaty soils of northern Quebec and Labrador, and across the mainland of Northern Canada. Known as akpik or aqpik in Inuktitut, or anpik in many Nunatsiavut communities, cloudberries start out as a hard and sour red fruit; as they ripen, the fruits soften and sweeten, becoming a translucent amber colour by mid- to late summer (depending on the region). They are an excellent source of vitamin C.
Designed by Jason Sikoak, an Inuk artist originally from Kikiak/Rigolet, Nunatsiavut, N.L., your coin’s reverse features the artist’s interpretation of the Inuit concepts of interconnectedness and coexistence with nature. Returning from the mud flats where the tide is rising, a Canada goose (Branta canadensis) —one of Canada’s most recognizable migratory species—is positioned in the foreground, where its flight alludes to the coming change of season that is part of nature’s cycle. Below, a family waits to catch the rising tide, having travelled by boat to gather their winter stores of akpik (cloudberries), which are plentiful enough to attract other species, including the black bear appearing on the far-off shore near the edge of the forest. The obverse features the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.
