2023 Great Britain 2-Pound Britannia 1oz. .999 Silver (No Tax) - Queen Elizabeth II Effigy
This limited release 2023 Britannia features the fifth and final effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. A Britannia coin featuring King Charles III's first effigy will be released in the new year.
The 2023 dated Britannia continues The Royal Mint's annual tradition of the popular Silver Britannia Coin. This coin continues the modern security features that were added as of 2021. These additions both decorate and protect the coin, just as the micro-text that borders the design states – 'DECUS ET TUTAMEN', which translates as 'AN ORNAMENT AND A SAFEGUARD'. In the lower left-hand of the design, below Britannia's flowing gown, is a trident to represent her naval history. As the viewer changes their perspective this trident becomes a padlock, emphasizing the coin's secure nature. Surface animation behind Britannia reflects the movement of waves, and fine details like the Union flag on Britannia's shield have been highlighted by tincture lines.
First released as a Gold Coin in 1987, The Royal Mint began producing the 1 oz Silver Britannia coin in 1997 as a proof, and then as a bullion coin in 1998. The coins minted from 1998-2012 contain .958 fine Silver, and beginning in 2013 bullion issues became the first to contain .999 fine Silver.
